Tesco shopper spots mini eggs on shelf but is baffled by price tag

For many, the appearence of Cadbury Mini Eggs in stores is a true sign that Christmas is over and that were getting closer to spring and Easter.

Introduced by Cadbury in 1967, the mini eggs in question are solid milk chocolate encased in a thin coating of hard candy “shell”, molded to resemble a miniature egg. They have since released special editions and flavours, including Mini Egg easter eggs and Mini Egg cookies.

However, several shoppers have now been left outraged after spotting the famous chocolate treat on the supermarket shelves. Not because they think it’s ‘too early’ for them to be sold, but rather for the price of them.

One of these shoppers was Welsh bikini competitor Nickie Noo Murtagh shared a moment from her Tesco shop, where she thought she’d treat herself to a package of Cadbury Mini Eggs before she’s due to go back on a diet. However, when she saw the price, she quickly changed her mind.

She decided to document the moment on TikTok to share the steep price with others to see.

“Six whole British pounds and twenty pence for this bag of mini eggs,” she revealed in the video, as she held up a 256g family pack of Cadbury Mini eggs for her viewers to see.

“I was willing to overlook the fact that Easter Eggs were out on Jan 1st for a cheeky bag of Mini Eggs while I’m still technically still allowed a treat,” she explained in the caption. “But then I saw the price tag! No way am I paying £6.20 for a bag … WTF is this price ?? Used to be a £1 right??”

Nickie wasn’t the only one who was baffled by the price, as the comment section was soon flooded with people sharing their thoughts.

“What in the world!!! I love a mini egg but not for that price…,” one person wrote, while another said: “Least it’ll stop me buying & eating them.”

A third user wrote: “Wow that’s ridiculous!”, with several others calling the price ‘insane’.

When asked for a comment about its prices, Tesco explained that a 256g pack of Mini Eggs is currently on Clubcard offer for £5.40, explaining that it’s competitively priced compared to the same product at other retailers.

Why are mini eggs so expensive?

The price of mini eggs have been increased due to an all-time high of cocoa prices. The Office for National Statistics, who are the UK’s national body for facts and figures, say that the price of chocolate has risen by over 17% in the year to October 2025. This is due to a global supply shortage caused by poor harvests in West Africa.

The UK sources the majority of its cocoa beans from the Ivory Coast and Ghana, where extreme weather events (including the 2023 El Niño phenomenon, droughts, and excessive rainfall) and the spread of crop diseases like the Cacao Swollen Shoot Virus (CSSV) have ruined harvests. Because of this, as well as climate crisis which has also affected cocoa crops, the amount of cocoa made worldwide is down by more than 14%.

In response to the high ingredient costs, UK chocolatiers and manufacturers like Cadbury and Mars Wrigley have increased product prices and reduced product sizes, which is commonly refered to as ‘shrinkflation’.
