A beautiful Spanish seaside town is beloved by French holidaymakers – and was home to one of the world’s most famous artists. Cadaqués in the province of Girona, Catalonia, sits on a bay in the middle of the Cap de Creus peninsula, and is known for its stunning waterfront and the surrounding natural beauty.
It’s located just two hours by car from Barcelona, but reportedly has far fewer tourists than its more famous neighbour, which is a major international travel destination. Cadaqués is also close the France’s southern border, making it a popular spot for French tourists looking to enjoy its sun-drenched charms, according to travel site The Barcelona Edit.
The local area’s most famous resident is undoubtedly the surrealist painter Salvador Dali, who’s family had a summer home there.
He later bought a home in neighbouring village of Portlligat which is now a museum celebrating his work.
The town’s beauty, and Dali’s association with it, saw the likes of David Hockney, Richard Hamilton, Marcel Duchamp, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Federico García Lorca also coming to enjoy its fresh sea air and picturesque views, and it continues to be a popular destination among art lovers.
As you’d expect from its coastal location, cadaques is also known for its superb seafood.
According to travel magazine Fascinating Spain, the “rocky coast and a harsh sea” give the “give the fish and seafood a particular taste”.
You can expect to find delicious fresh sardines, groupers, gilt-head brams, the anchovies, mussels and sea urchins at area’s various’s restaurants, the outlet adds.
According to Spain’s official tourism website, the town is “crossed by beautiful beaches and secluded coves”, and is “the ideal starting point to discover the rest of the Alt Empordà region”, where is located, “full of historic towns, unusual natural spaces and abundant archaeological sites”.
You can also take in the scenic spleandour at the nearby Cap de Creus Natural Park, home to a rich community of sea birds and reptiles.
Tourists can fly directly from UK airports to Girona, with Cadaqués only an hour or so away by car.
