The beautiful seaside town sandwiched between two major cities but without the tourists | World | News

La Rochelle is a coastal town in southwestern France that lies between two larger and much busier cities of Bordeaux, about 113 miles to the south, and Nantes, roughly 89 miles to the north.

Though quieter than its neighbouring cities, La Rochelle can offer a fantastic escape from the usual tourist spots, according to an expert.

Speaking to the Daily Express, Stephanie Rytting who is a travel expert and the founder of France Adventurer, recommended La Rochelle for those looking for a more peaceful French destination.

She said: “France is one of the go-to destinations for British people, especially since it’s so close to them and they can always hop on the plane for a short flight.

“However, most of them visit known destinations such as Paris, Nice, or Cannes. Instead of popular cities, I recommend exploring the lesser-known towns.”

She added: “I invite you to discover La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast.

“Though quieter than its more well-known peers, this quaint port town nonetheless boasts historical sites and stunning sea views.

“For British tourists hoping to escape the crowds, La Rochelle is a fantastic location because of its relaxed atmosphere and authentic regional food.”

According to the expert, there are many beautiful places worth visiting in La Rochelle and one of them is the port, which has been vital to the town’s economy since the 12th century.

The Vieux Port is a popular spot for visitors who wish to learn more about the town’s marine history.

Other historical landmarks include the Porte Royale and the Grosse Horloge, which show the town’s long past as a major port during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

The town also offers attractions like the Aquarium de La Rochelle and the Musee Maritime.

On top of that, according to Rytting, “La Rochelle provides visitors with a real sense of France’s coastal culture”.

Aside from its peaceful atmosphere, La Rochelle is known for its charm and history.

More importantly, the town is far from the typical tourist rush, making it a great option for those looking for a break from the more crowded areas of France.

It is also easy to access, given the fact that it is located between two big cities in Bordeaux and Nantes with major airports.

There are frequent Ryanair flights from London Stansted to Nantes.
