Three rare 50p coins worth loads – including error version

Rare coins can be found in the most unexpected places, from your loose change to a forgotten corner of your attic.

The truth is, certain coins can fetch an astonishing amount if you decide to sell them at auction or on eBay. Now, there are three specific coins worth keeping an eye out for and they could already be in your possession.

On TikTok, user @CoinCollectingWizard has gained a reputation for sharing advice on which coins to look out for. With a whopping 181,000 followers on the platform, he recently highlighted three 50p pieces that could potentially bring in a tidy sum.

In his video, he asked: “Do you have any 50p coins with interesting designs? You might just have a rare one. The 2017 Benjamin Bunny 50p is usually just worth face value unless you have a rare rotation error version.

“The error Benjamin Bunny coin has the Queen’s head printed facing the wrong direction. When a coin is flipped over, the Queen’s head should be facing to the left but on a rotation error coin, this would be different. Around £30 is what you can get for this coin.”

He then shifted focus to the Athletics 50p coin from the London 2012 Olympics collection. A total of 29 different 50p coins were minted by the Royal Mint to commemorate the iconic games.

The TikTok user added: “Around 2.2million of the Athletics 50p coin was minted and released into circulation in 2011. But this earlier version was minted in 2009 and is more valuable to collectors, if you have this coin dated 2009, then you have found it and it could sell for £250+.”

He also touched on the Aquatics 50p error coin, noting its potential worth of a staggering £2,000 if it features lines over the face.

Wrapping up his insights, he said: “A small handful of this original design was put into circulation but it was then adapted very quickly to show the face above water. With so few of the original design out there, it means the coin’s value has pushed up significantly.”

The video discussing these rare coins quickly went viral, amassing over 4,500 likes and 200 comments. Various responses poured in with one user stating: “Got loads of them,” while another asked urgently: “I have loads to sell but I don’t know where to go.”

An intrigued third user chimed in: “Wow it’s good to know.”
