A shockingly savage film that allegedly left viewers “fainting” whilst others issued stark warnings is now available to watch on Prime Video.
Bones and All made its debut in 2022, featuring Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell, with audiences being cautioned before viewing this “unhinged” production. The R-rated romantic thriller comes from Oscar-nominated director Luca Guadagnino, who earned acclaim for his 2017 sensation Call Me By Your Name.
This gruesome horror romance, adapted from Camille DeAngelis’s 2015 novel of the same title, chronicles two cannibals who find themselves unexpectedly smitten whilst battling their insatiable hunger for human flesh.
Maren (portrayed by Taylor Russell) sets out to locate her mother, during which she strikes up an improbable partnership with fellow young cannibal Lee (Timothée Chalamet).
An elderly flesh-eater named Sully becomes fixated on Maren in what has been described as a macabre twist on the timeless tale of Romeo and Juliet, reports the Mirror.
The film – which garnered accolades after its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in 2022 – is now streaming on Prime Video for those brave enough to hit play.
Prime Video entices viewers: “In a world that cannot abide who they truly are, a young woman who is learning how to survive on the margins of society and an intense, disenfranchised drifter embark upon a road trip, searching for identity and chasing beauty in a perilous world.”
Boasting an outstanding 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, one critic declared: “This is the most creepy, atmospheric, and yet beautiful movie I have ever seen! It deserved so much more acclaim that it got!”.
Another penned: “A truly twisted Romeo and Juliet story that horrifies you and pulls on the heart strings at the same time.”
A third contributor noted: “The perfect balance between horror and romance. The masterpiece I never knew I needed.”
A fourth responded: “This was horrifying and beautiful.” Barry Hertz from the Globe and Mail proclaimed: “Bones and All is beautiful and unhinged all in the same bite.”
Meanwhile on IMDB, the production garnered a somewhat modest 6.8/10 rating, though audiences were generous with their accolades.
One cinema enthusiast raved: “BONES AND ALL is an intense, heart-breaking, and uplifting tale that is sure to leave an impact. It’s a must-watch for anyone who enjoys horror and romance, or simply needs a reminder of the power of love. Be warned though – this movie has lots of blood and gore, so it’s not for the faint of heart.”
Another cautioned: “Not for the faint-hearted and definitely don’t eat a lot before the movie.”
Accounts emerged of audience members collapsing and being sick during showings owing to its gruesome content, with filmmaker Luca Guadagnino revealing to the Irish Times in 2022: “I heard about people fainting and some people also throwing up, some screaming.”
Upon its debut, Russell was honoured with the Best Young Actress award at the Venice Film Festival, and both actors received high praise from cinema enthusiasts. Despite the acclaim, the film didn’t fare as well financially, earning a global box office total of $15.2 million against a reported budget of $16-20 million.
Nonetheless, it continues to hold a special place in the hearts of many viewers.
