Tom Brady’s confession that learning a new playbook is “really tough” may serve as a stark warning to veteran Aaron Rodgers, as the New York Jets unveiled their new coach this month. Former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has been announced as the Jets’ new boss, and he is already contemplating his options with Rodgers.

Glenn played cornerback in the NFL for the Jets, the Houston Texans and the Dallas Cowboys, before finishing his career at the same time that Rodgers was beginning with the Green Bay Packers. His deep knowledge of the sport and understanding of what it takes to win a game will serve him well in the hot seat – but he has some decisions to make first.

After he was unveiled as the new head coach, Glenn wanted to “nip things in the bud” regarding the veteran quarterback on his roster. The 52-year-old said: “Just a couple of things I want to nip in the bud before I get to the Q&A. I got the job on Wednesday. Moog [GM Darren Mougey] came and got the job on Saturday. We came here on Sunday and we started talking.

“Here’s what I do know – Aaron Rodgers will be talked about, it will be talked about. We’ve already texted that communication with Aaron Rodgers. And as we continue to look at the roster, we’ll make decisions accordingly. And that’s with a number of people on the team.”

This stark admission could be a notion that Rodgers’ place at the Jets isn’t set in stone – and Brady previously made a point that the 41-year-old should take heed of. In 2021, the NFL icon was the starter at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he spoke out about the struggles of learning a brand new playbook – especially after being used to the same one for so long at the New England Patriots.

Brady said: “It’s been different having the opportunity over this time to move and to, for example, study my playbook – I mean I really haven’t had to do that in 19 years, so you forget, ‘man, that’s really tough,’ like all of the different terminologies. You’re going back a very long time in my career to really have to put the mental energy in like I did.”

Brady would have been 44 years old at the time, and Rodgers isn’t far behind that age right now – and he is already fighting the battle of time.

Glenn is yet to hire a new offensive coordinator, who will come in with their own ideas and plans for a playbook. Given that Glenn spent his years as a defensive player and also a like-minded coordinator, picking a good offensive boss is imperative for the Jets’ success. ABC News reports that Los Angeles Rams’ pass game coordinator and tight ends coach Nick Caley has been mentioned.

There are plenty of offensive-minded coaches out there who may opt to head to a new venture at the Jets, but Glenn will have his work cut out for him in New York. The AFC East team ranks last in scoring and went 5-12 last year with Rodgers at the helm, so their performances with the ball need to improve quickly.

No matter whether Rodgers chooses to stay at the Jets and Glenn places his confidence in the veteran quarterback, the new head coach is adamant he will be looking over the whole roster in the offseason. He added: “Me and Moug are going to sit and talk and go over the whole roster. I would tell you now that is going to be the answer to a number of questions when it comes to the roster in general.

“We’re looking forward to that process. I can’t tell you how long that process will be, but the thing is we’re going to make sure we get the right answer. And we’re not going to rush to this answer. We’re going to get the right answer.”
