Tottenham statement confirms reason Thomas Frank was sacked | Football | Sport

Tottenham have issued a statement confirming that Thomas Frank has departed the club. Tuesday’s defeat to Newcastle United proved to be his last match in charge, with Spurs now sitting just five points above the Premier League drop zone.

Frank was brought in as Tottenham‘s new head coach last summer to succeed Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed even despite breaking the club’s 17-year trophy drought by claiming Europa League glory.

While Frank enjoyed an encouraging start to his tenure in north London – securing victory in four of his opening six matches – Tottenham’s performances have plummeted in recent months.

In fact, Spurs have claimed just twp victories from their last 17 top-flight fixtures stretching back to a 3-0 triumph at Everton back in October. This dismal streak has sent them tumbling to 16th in the Premier League standings, five points ahead of 18th-placed West Ham, who occupy the final relegation berth.

Following the 2-1 home reverse against Newcastle, it appeared unavoidable that Tottenham would act decisively and they have now done precisely that, with the club announcing in a statement that Frank ‘will leave today’.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Tottenham said: “The club has taken the decision to make a change in the men’s head coach position and Thomas Frank will leave today.

“Thomas was appointed in June 2025, and we have been determined to give him the time and support needed to build for the future together. However, results and performances have led the board to conclude that a change at this point in the season is necessary.

“Throughout his time at the club, Thomas has conducted himself with unwavering commitment, giving everything in his efforts to move the club forward. We would like to thank him for his contribution and wish him every success in the future.”

Frank appeared frustrated and dejected during his post-match press conference following Tottenham’s loss to Newcastle on Tuesday. His Spurs side endured boos and jeers after another underwhelming evening in N17.

“I understand the fans’ frustration,” Frank said. “We are in a position we don’t want to be in and we are working very hard day and night to change. I also think it is a situation now the club has been in, it’s fair to say, for almost two years and at the end of last season as well – clearly a pattern that we struggle to manage Europe and the Premier League. It’s something me, the team, the club, the players we need to learn to do even better physically and mentally to deal with that.

“Part of that of course is the 11 injuries or 10 plus a suspension plus another one today which of course doesn’t help in a situation like that. Then we face a Newcastle team which is struggling a little bit lately, look at what they put out on the pitch, compared to what they have done in the last three years.

“I think it’s fair to say it’s quite different to us. I think Newcastle were more on top first half. We came back in it very well. Then I think it was a little bit symbolic of our season that we had a transition going one way, then we misplaced a pass and defended badly for the 2-1 goal.”

Tottenham’s next fixture sees them host Arsenal at home on Sunday, February 22. It’s clear whether Spurs are going to appoint a permanent successor before then, though Roberto De Zerbi is the outright favourite to become the club’s next manager, with Ryan Mason and John Heitinga among the others in the frame.
