Toys from Tesco, M&S and Amazon urgently recalled over asbestos risk

A selection of popular toys stocked in major British retailers, including Smyth’s, The Entertainer, Marks and Spencer, Tesco, Asda and Amazon, have been urgently recalled. The products present a significant health hazard as they may contain asbestos.

Consequently, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued multiple recall notices. Anyone possessing the children’s playthings has been advised to cease using them immediately and dispose of them safely. Asbestos is a prohibited substance because even at minimal levels, it can present a health hazard.

The OPSS has outlined disposal instructions for anyone with the toys to follow and encouraged customers to request a refund.

Stretcherz Toys

Multiple HTI Toys Stretcherz Toys have been recalled from consumers and removed from sale in recent weeks. They are described as stretch toys filled with sand-like material, reports the Mirror.

The playthings were stocked at a wide range of retailers including Aldi, Argos, Asda, BandM, Early Learning Centre, The Entertainer, Home Bargains, Matalan, Poundland, Primark, Smyths Toys, Tesco, TK Maxx/Homesense, and The Works.

Various versions of Stretcherz toys were stocked at the retailers.

Sand Art activity kit

Colour Day’s Sand Art activity kit has been withdrawn and is characterised as a craft toy comprising 10 bags of coloured sand, 10 bottles, and tools. The toys were available on Amazon and eBay.

The online marketplaces have withdrawn the listings, and anyone possessing the product has been advised to cease using it immediately.

Out To Impress Sand Art Creations

Addo Play Limited’s Out To Impress Sand Art Creations has been withdrawn owing to the asbestos risk. It is a sand art kit featuring multiple colours of play sand and plastic bottles.

The product was available at Early Learning Centre, The Entertainer, Tesco, Matalan and M&S shops and websites between August 2023 and February 2026.

The toy bears the item code: 318-19149-B. Customers must cease using the toy and request a refund.

What to do if you have an affected toy

The OPSS advises anyone possessing the items to cease using them immediately. It added: “If the sand is still in its packaging, place in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double tape it securely, label it clearly and store in a secure location out of the reach of children.

“If the sand has been used, clean up sites where the product was used using wet cloths to avoid generating dust. Wear gloves and a mask. Double bag the sand, gloves, mask and cloths. “

The OPSS continued: “Keep children and other people away from areas where the sand has been used until the area has been cleaned. Dispose of the product in your general household waste.” The Entertainer has asked customers not to return the item to their stores, but rather to dispose of them in accordance with the OPSS guidelines.
