Traveller buys beer in Canada – and is stunned by cost | Weird | News
A man revealed how much he was asked to cough up to buy some beers in Canada – and it’s left people stunned.
The snap was shared on Reddit, and it shows a box of Coors Light priced up at $58.95, which works out at around £32.60 here in the UK.
Alongside the picture, he wrote: “This is the cost of beer in Toronto, Ontario. I’m wondering if it is the same as in USA.”
He noted that, in American dollars, the price would work out at around $42.80, so it’s quite a hefty price tag. Nonetheless, people were quick to offer their knowledge.
Even though it’s easy to be taken aback by the amount he was expected to splurge on booze, it seems as though there are other areas where it’s not that cheap to enjoy a tipple or two.
One person replied: “A 36 pack of Coors Light is $26.99 at my local Costco warehouse. A case and a half for a touch more than half of what you’re paying for a case.”
Another person wrote: “That’s horrible. I’d be sober.” A third replied: “If you live in Toronto isn’t it a sin to consider ‘Coors Light’ actually beer? Also $19.99 in NH USA.”
Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “England here. I couldn’t find a 30 pack of Coors. but we do have 15 packs which are £12 each including tax.
“So £24 for 30 which works out to 31 USD OR 42CAD. Bud Light is cheaper at £20 for 30.”
Despite there being a lot of chat about the price, some pointed out there is probably a reason why beer can seem expensive in some parts of the world. It looks as though it’s slightly cheaper in America though.
One person explained: “Your cost translates to around USD $43. However, yours also includes taxes and deposit fees.
“Retailers in the US don’t include tax or deposit on shelf price tags. That’s calculated at the register when checking out if required. I can get a similar 30 pack of Coors light from Walmart for a total of USD $28.84 (including taxes and fees), which is CAD $39.72.
“So, it’s around CAD $19 cheaper to purchase in some parts of the United States. The United States is big and varied. Some states and locations might charge more or less than this.”
Another chimed in with: “Americans complain about Canadian sales taxes which are generally 13-15%. Most of the US is like 4-8% sales tax and often varies even on the county level, which is why taxes are applied after the advertised price (the final price differs often from town to town by a small amount).
“Booze is the one exception in Canada which is final sale price, because taxes are more like 80%.”
