Netflix has just dropped Troll 2 following the original 2022 film’s phenomenal success as the platform’s most-watched non-English language movie, racking up a staggering 103 million views.
The Norwegian sequel by director Roar Uthaug has sparked divided opinions amongst viewers, with some critics branding it a lacklustre follow-up.
Nevertheless, plenty of fans have showered the Netflix blockbuster with perfect 10/10 ratings on IMDb, with reviewer jared-25331 gushing: “First off, it was great to see these characters back on another mission to stop another giant troll from destroying the city. I liked how we get to see more lore of these giant trolls from Norway and what they’re like in this world.
“The acting from the cast is still good even if I was watching this movie with the English dub and subtitles. The special effects for the giant trolls are still fantastic.
“Overall, Troll 2 is an excellent follow-up to one of the better modern monster movies as well as one of the better movies on Netflix and I can’t wait for the third movie to come out.”
Director Roar Uthaug has already hinted at plans for a potential third instalment.
In conversation with techradar, he revealed: “There’s nothing too concrete but ideas have started to spin in the back of my mind. I don’t think there’s any limits to how big the Trollverse can get.”
Troll 2 has allegedly become the most ambitious film production ever undertaken across the Nordic region, with enthusiasts particularly appreciating the clever nods to monster movie classics Godzilla and King Kong. Uthaug revealed there’s scope for additional Easter eggs in a potential third instalment, explaining: “I try to keep up with what other monster movies are doing, but we also try to make, to give it our own spin. We always try to leave some hints.
“I’m a big, film nerd myself, so we try to add some Easter eggs for people and some references. I don’t think there’s any monster our trolls couldn’t take down.”
User lnino-11724 praised the sequel as “excellent” in their IMDb review, commenting: “I enjoy it very much.
“It brings back very old Norwegian folk stories with a little modern twist. Good, entertaining movie.”
Yet some viewers believed the original creature feature should have remained standalone.
Phonsew vented: “This, right here, is why I cancelled my Netflix subscription. Well, not this movie specifically but the fact that the money I was paying for a subscription went to this utter tripe instead of, oh, I don’t know, a second season of ANY of the great show’s they’ve killed.
“Where does one even begin? Bad writing, bad acting, bad foreign dub (for those who brave that path), silly cinematography…I can’t even.”
The debut film chronicles a motley crew who band together to halt an enormous ancient troll awakened within a Norwegian mountainside.
The 2022 production earned an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers appreciating the concept of a colossal beast terrorising an urban centre, reminiscent of Godzilla or King Kong.
Whilst the premise wasn’t wholly groundbreaking, it offered a refreshing perspective on folklore. Regarding the future of the franchise, the post-credit scene in Troll 2 offers tantalising hints about a possible third instalment.
The preservation of a troll specimen suggests there’s still much to unearth about these creatures and their past.
Moreover, despite the surviving troll seemingly living peacefully alongside humans, this harmonious existence could be jeopardised. Might some unforeseen event shatter this peaceful cohabitation?
Whilst no official announcement or release date for a third film has been made, the creative team appears receptive to the idea, leaving the narrative intriguingly open-ended.
