Trump cuts US refugee numbers to just 7,500 – 1 group will still be allowed in | World | News

The Trump administration has slashed the number of refugees permitted entry into the US to just 7,500, with the majority being white South Africans, a steep decline from the hundreds of thousands previously welcomed from conflict zones and persecution worldwide.
The administration announced the move on Thursday via a notice in the Federal Registry.
No explanation was provided for the figures, which represent a sharp reduction from the previous year’s cap of 125,000 set under the Biden administration. It has been previously reported that the administration was contemplating admitting as few as 7,500 refugees, predominantly white South Africans.
The memorandum stated only that the admission of 7,500 refugees during the 2026 fiscal year was “justified by humanitarian concerns or is otherwise in the national interest.”
