Tyson Fury confirms boxing comeback after Anthony Joshua fight update | Boxing | Sport
Tyson Fury has announced his comeback to boxing, just a year after hanging up his gloves. The ‘Gypsy King’ has been putting in the hard yards during training and has now disclosed that he plans to make his return to the ring in 2026. Fury stunned the boxing world by announcing his retirement last January after suffering consecutive losses to Oleksandr Usyk.
The 37-year-old was incensed after the judges ruled against him in his clash with the Ukrainian fighter and promptly called time on his career. However, the former heavyweight king has recently dropped hints about a sensational comeback to competitive boxing. Fury has been sharing regular workout clips with his vast online following.
This appears to have culminated in today’s announcement. Fury uploaded a montage of training clips accompanied by an unmistakable message.
Taking to Instagram, Fury declared: “2026 is that year Return of the mac. Been away for a while but im back now, 37 years old and still punching. nothing better to do than punch men in the face and get paid for it.”
Rather than marking the New Year with festivities, Fury demonstrated his commitment to getting back in fighting shape. The ‘Gypsy King’ shared footage of himself working the pads at ISS Boxing and Muay Thai in Pattaya City, Thailand, and has also engaged in light sparring sessions with fellow heavyweight Kevin Lerena.
“This is how I spent my New Year. Grinding and working my a** off! couldn’t think of anything better to do than this!” he posted on Instagram. “Great things come to those who work hard. All in the name of Jesus. Little by little on the daily we keep climbing.”
Rumours had been swirling around a potential British heavyweight showdown between Fury and Anthony Joshua. However, Joshua has since been involved in a devastating car accident that claimed the lives of two dear friends.
Promoter Frank Warren admitted uncertainty about what lies ahead for both Fury and Joshua in the wake of this tragedy.
Warren explained to The Mirror: “Well, boxing will certainly be the last thing on his [Joshua’s] mind, right now,” and added: “He’s obviously lost two team members who were good, close friends who are now no longer with us, so that will be a big loss to him.
“I don’t know the extent of his injuries, but it’s also how mentally this will affect him. Boxing again will be the last thing on his mind, but tragedy can affect people in different ways; sometimes, you need something you can really focus on to pull through to the other side.”
