US Open star withdraws from tournament before final round due to awkward injury | Golf | Sport
Canadian golfer Corey Conners has withdrawn from the 2025 US Open ahead of Sunday’s final round. The two-time PGA Tour winner was tied for 39th after the third round on eight-over-par.
The world No.21 appeared to struggle with a wrist injury on Saturday after hurting himself playing out of a bunker on the 11th hole, with some claims that he struck a hidden TV cable in the lip of the bunker. He then took a medical timeout to receive treatment before continuing with his round. However, clearly hampered, a back-nine score of 40 left him 12 shots off the leader, Sam Burns, and out of contention.
Conners reportedly had issues with his wrist and forearm area after Thursday’s first round. He then appeared to aggravate the injury with his bunker shot on Saturday after his ball had plugged in a difficult lie.
Despite the injury Conners, 33, was seen on the practice range this morning as he tried to warm up before teeing off. However, he was unable to complete his routine due to pain and duly informed organisers of his decision.
His resilience on Saturday was praised by playing partner Michael Kim, who wrote on X: “Corey Conners deserves a full page on his own today,” he wrote. “The dude STRIPES it. Little draw, didn’t miss a shot on the front nine and he missed a short one on 3 so could have been even lower.
“But then he plugged his bunker shot and while trying to hit out of it, hurt his wrist. He was obviously in some pain as soon as he hit it and I didn’t think he’d play more honestly.
“It took like 20 minutes for his physio to get to the green (don’t get me started on that terrible process). He gutted it out but was definitely out of rhythm coming in.”
Conners tied for eighth at the US Masters this year, his fourth top-10 finish at Augusta. He made the cut at the US Open for the first time at Pinehurst in 2024, where he ended up tied for ninth.
