Vet on why dog’s yawn and it’s probably not what you think
Veterinarian Andrés Santiago has revealed that contrary to common belief, dogs don’t just yawn because they’re tired. The Spanish vet explained in a TikTok video that yawning could be a dog’s way of communicating its feelings in stressful or uncomfortable situations.
“The yawn is a sign of calm,” clarified the expert, not necessarily an indication of sleepiness. He further elaborated: “Many dogs yawn when they are hugged tightly, when there is noise, or when you speak to them in a very serious tone”.
This behaviour, rather than indicating fatigue, could be a signal for a calmer environment: “It’s their way of saying: ‘Relax, I don’t want any trouble.”
Santiago advises pet owners to watch if their dog yawns during tense moments and respond appropriately. It’s important to provide the dog with space, find a quieter setting, and lower your voice – all of which can significantly influence the animal’s behaviour.
He believes that being attentive to these small signs can enhance the bond between a dog and its owner.
Signs your dog could be fatigued
Dogs, like humans, can experience fatigue, and it’s important for owners to recognize the signs so they can take steps to address it. Here are common signs that your dog may be fatigued:
1. Excessive Sleeping or Lethargy
Your dog is sleeping more than usual or seems reluctant to get up and move around. Even after a long nap, they still seem tired or uninterested in normal activities.
2. Lack of Energy
Your dog appears less enthusiastic during playtime, walks, or other activities they usually enjoy. They may walk or run slower than usual or stop frequently during walks.
3. Panting or Heavy Breathing
Your dog pants excessively or breathes heavily, even after a mild activity. This could indicate they’re overexerted or fatigued.
4. Changes in Behavior
They seem irritable, withdrawn, or less engaged with you or other pets. They might seek solitude, preferring to be left alone more than usual.
5. Decreased Appetite
Fatigue can sometimes cause a loss of appetite or disinterest in food or treats.
