Vet urges dog owners to do two minute job after every walk

A shocking 99% of dogs have faecal matter on their paws when walking around your home after returning from outdoor excursions, according to a recent study.

Given this alarming statistic, it’s crucial that pet owners clean their dog’s paws after being outside – not just to prevent the health hazards posed to household members by your pet’s feet, but also to enhance your dog’s overall health.

Beyond avoiding your family accidentally coming into contact with excrement tracked in from outdoors, the dirt and bacteria that accumulates on your dog’s paws can lead to irritation and dermatitis.

Veterinary professionals also recommend pet owners take extra care with cleaning during the autumn and winter periods, as mud and snow can adversely affect animals’ skin and nails.

In a TikTok video, vet Pancho Cavero highlighted the significance of maintaining your dog’s paws.

He said: “Paw pads aren’t just soft cushions; they’re essential multifunctional tools for the daily survival of our furry friends. First, they act as shock absorbers, protecting the joints and bones of their paws during jumping and running by absorbing the impact with the ground.

“Additionally, paw pads serve as protection against extreme weather conditions. In summer, they help animals avoid getting burned by hot asphalt, and in winter, they provide insulation against the cold.

“Another essential role is providing traction. The rough texture of the pads enables them to grip the ground more effectively, which is essential for running or climbing safely.

“And let’s not forget that paw pads contain sweat glands that help animals mark their territory with pheromones. So, as you can see, paw pads are true miracles of nature – designed to protect, insulate, and help our pets on their daily adventures.”
