Wales rugby star retires from international rugby before squad named | Rugby | Sport
Will Rowlands, the stalwart Wales lock, has announced his retirement from international rugby ahead of the autumn internationals. The 34-year-old, who has been a key figure in the Welsh pack for the past five years, retires with an impressive tally of 41 caps, three tries, and a Six Nations title in 2021 under his belt. He was also honoured as Wales Men’s Player of the Year in 2022.
The news of Rowlands’ decision broke just moments before head coach Steve Tandy was due to announce his squad for the upcoming autumn campaign – his first since taking over from Warren Gatland earlier this year. Tandy paid a heartfelt tribute to the Racing 92 star, lauding both his talent and his character within the national setup.
“Will has been an amazing servant for the game in Welsh rugby,” Tandy said. “He’s been an outstanding player and a great human being in the environment.
“Whoever’s spoken about Will said he added so much value to the national game, both on and off the pitch.
“Obviously it’s disappointing for us to lose a player of that quality, but we’re totally understanding around his circumstance and wish him all the best for his future.”
Rowlands made his debut in 2020 and quickly established himself as one of Wales’ most reliable forwards, known for his towering lineout presence and tireless work rate.
He played a prominent role at both the 2023 Rugby World Cup and during Wales’ Six Nations campaigns in recent years.
However, his departure paves the way for the upcoming generation. Rhys Davies and James Fender are among the young locks expected to rise as a new era commences under Tandy’s guidance.
Although Rowlands’ absence will be deeply missed, his legacy as a reliable, smart and dedicated player for Wales is already well established.
