Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick share the same perspective on JJ Gabriel and Kai Rooney: reduce the burden and allow them to flourish. The two prospects both found the net on Saturday as Manchester United’s Under-18s claimed a 3-0 victory over Blackburn.

Nevertheless, despite the mounting anticipation, those overseeing their development are urging caution. Carrick, currently acting as United’s interim head coach, has previously stressed the need for patience with 15-year-old Gabriel. He outlined that whilst the club values the teenager highly, a considered strategy is vital to manage both his talent and the spotlight upon him.

“JJ is a big talent. We obviously think an awful lot of him, but patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and working with him in development,” Carrick said earlier this month.

Wayne Rooney, the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 253 strikes, has echoed that stance when discussing his son Kai. In dialogue with former colleague Gary Neville, he stressed that it remains far too early to assess whether the 16-year-old will replicate a comparable path to achievement.

“You never know. I think he’s shown potential and good signs,” Rooney Sr said in 2024. “He’ll be at United for the next two years and that’s when they make decisions on you so we’ll have to just wait and see.”

Manchester United’s Under-18s are locked in a tight battle with local rivals Manchester City for the U18 Premier League crown, and their latest triumph over Blackburn has bolstered their chances. Gabriel broke the deadlock from the spot, whilst Kai doubled the lead shortly after entering as a substitute. Jim Thwaites subsequently wrapped up the victory with a stunning free-kick.

Gabriel has been exceptional for the U18s this season, finding the net 21 times in 23 appearances across all competitions. While he remains ineligible for Premier League action, he has already participated in first-team training sessions on several occasions, an indication of the esteem in which the club holds him.

“What he’s done when he’s trained, he’s done well as you’d expect and it’s good to have the younger players come up with us,” Carrick said. “He’s doing really well.”

United have made clear attempts to demonstrate a pathway into the senior side for Gabriel – even welcoming him and his family to the Old Trafford directors’ box earlier in the season.

Kai, meanwhile, has also garnered attention after advancing quickly through the academy ranks. Like Gabriel, he is amongst the youngest players consistently featured at U18 level, underlining how highly both prospects are regarded. The club’s heritage of developing young talent only heightens the excitement.

Given such a pedigree, ambitious comparisons are inevitable – but as both Wayne Rooney and Carrick have highlighted, expectations require careful management.
