Wolves: More chaos as angry Ait-Nouri carried off pitch by team-mate after Ipswich loss | Football | Sport

Wolves’ farcical season descended to new depths after a dramatic late defeat against Premier League relegation rivals Ipswich Town at Molineux on Saturday. Rayan Ait-Nouri was at the centre of unsavoury scenes moments after Jack Taylor’s 94th-minute hammer blow in the Black Country.

The Wolves defender saw red at the final whistle, receiving his second yellow card for what looked like a heated argument with team-mate Matheus Cunha on the pitch.

Fellow defender Craig Dawson had to intervene, holding Ait-Nouri back and pushing him away from the squabble before having to carry him off the pitch.

Ait-Nouri appeared incensed, and his antics made Dawson just as unhappy as he shoved the Algeria international towards the Molineux tunnel.

Ipswich took the lead via a Matt Doherty own goal in the first half before Cunha fired the hosts level in the 72nd minute – offering hope of a crucial comeback.

However, the result went the other way at the end of stoppage time when Taylor’s bullet header from Jack Clarke’s last-ditch corner kick sent the long-stretching away end into raptures.

It was only Ipswich’s second win since returning to the Premier League this season, also triumphing on the road at Tottenham 2-1 in November.

Meanwhile, Wolves suffered their 11th defeat in 16 league games and their fourth on the bounce, slipping below Ipswich to 19th in the table.

The build-up to the match was dominated by Gary O’Neil’s decision to strip Mario Lemina of the Wolves captaincy after another post-match bust-up last time out.

Lemina was involved in a heated altercation with assistant manager Shaun Derry after the 2-1 defeat at West Ham United on Monday.

A day before Ipswich’s visit, O’Neil confirmed that Nelson Semedo would replace the 31-year-old as skipper, another twist in a woeful campaign.

O’Neil was widely expected to face the sack after tasting defeat against fellow under-fire boss Julen Lopetegui at the London Stadium.

Wolves backed the Englishman to continue his reign this weekend, but the club’s latest damaging defeat will apply further pressure.

More chastening scenes between team-mates after the match will only add to concerns about a broken dressing room in need of new leadership.

Wolves face a mammoth trip to Leicester City – also licking their wounds after a 4-0 defeat at Newcastle United – next weekend.

A daunting 10-match run follows, which involves home clashes against Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Fulham.

Away assignments at Tottenham, Newcastle United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Bournemouth are also on the agenda.
