Woman in tears over vet’s message sent day after cat put down
Saying goodbye to a pet is devastating – and it’s enough to stop an owner from ever welcoming another into their home and heart.
However, whilst mourning your loss, it’s important to remember the joyful memories you created and the impact you had on one another’s lives.
This has prompted a woman to share the touching letter she received from her vet mere days after having her cat, Mabel, put to sleep.
She revealed on Reddit: “I recently lost my sweet baby Mabel to kidney failure. She put up a good fight, but in the end there was just nothing more that could be done to help her.
“I had to make the heartbreaking decision to put her down, because as much as I didn’t want to lose her, I also couldn’t let her continue to be in pain.”
Praising the vets, she explains the team attempted everything to save Mabel’s life – but tragically, it was her time to cross the rainbow bridge.
She continued: “She was so loved by every staff member there. Everyone was involved and invested in her care, even the receptionists.”
“There was a point when some of the techs were on vacation in Ireland but were still messaging the vet to check in on Mabel.
“When it became clear that the treatment wasn’t working, the vet cried with me. She gave me her personal cell number in case there were any emergencies after hours.”
Merely days after saying goodbye, she collected her post and was taken aback to discover a letter from the vets – and it immediately moved her to tears.
“There was a card with handwritten condolences from everyone at the clinic, as well as a card from the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine expressing their sympathies and letting me know that the vet had made a donation to their programme in Mabel’s honour to help train future veterinarians,” she revealed.
“I can confidently say I will never go to another vet. They have me and my fur babies for life.
“I have never been to a vet that cares so deeply about their patients and pet parents.
“While I wish that Mabel’s story could have ended differently, I couldn’t ask for anyone better to ease her onto the rainbow bridge, and I have received so much more love and support from them in the wake of her loss than I ever expected.”
Responding to her post, one user commented: “I have so much respect for vets who deal with the sad as much as the good.
“Your vet truly is a keeper because it really sounds like they care. I’m sorry for your loss of Mabel, and I’m sure she knew how much you loved her when she closed her eyes for the last time.”
Another user chimed in: “My vet did this after I said goodbye to my elderly kidney cat. I was so touched I cried.”
A third user expressed: “I’m so sorry for your loss, but I’m so glad you found such a loving and capable vet! Not fully trusting your vet is horrible.
“I am not satisfied with how the vet who has been treating my cats handled two of their cases, so now I feel lost not knowing where to go in the future. Sending you love.”
