Yoane Wissa injury update as Newcastle debut finally close after Tottenham draw | Football | Sport

Yoane Wissa is on the brink of making his debut for Newcastle United in their home match against Burnley this Saturday, according to Eddie Howe. The £55million signing from Brentford has yuet to make his debut for the Magpies. He has been out of action since early September due to a knee injury sustained while on international duty with DR Congo.

The 29-year-old striker joined the Magpies on deadline day but has been sidelined ever since. However, he has been diligently working with the medical team behind the scenes as he recovers from his PCL injury and resumed training last week. Wissa also participated in a confidential 11v11 training match, with Howe revealing that he would be involved in another full-scale game this week in preparation for the weekend’s match. This suggests that Wissa could potentially secure a spot on the bench for the crucial Premier League clash against Burnley at St James’ Park.

However, Howe remained non-committal about Wissa’s chances of playing, stating that he would need to evaluate the player’s performance in training over the next two days before making a decision. “I don’t know, we will see how the week goes,” he said. “We’ve got a lot more training to do so we’ll see.”

Newcastle received a boost earlier this week when it was confirmed that Wissa would not be participating in the African Cup of Nations next month with DR Congo. There had been concerns that the player would depart for the tournament just as he regained fitness, resulting in him missing a month of action during the busy festive period.

However, he has not been selected for the DR Congo squad and is instead focusing on his recovery in Tyneside. This reduces the urgency for Newcastle to hasten his return to the first team.

Howe will also evaluate midfielder Sandro Tonali’s condition. The Italian did not return to the pitch after half-time during Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham due to an injury sustained in the first half.

In the immediate aftermath of the Spurs match, he stated: “Sandro took a knock in the first half. I don’t quite know the extent of the injury or what type of injury it is.”
