19 big-name players miss PGA Championship cut including DeChambeau | Golf | Sport
Bryson DeChambeau, Tommy Fleetwood and Robert MacIntyre are among the stars of golf who missed the cut at the PGA Championship. Aronimink Golf Club proved increasingly challenging for some of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf’s finest players over the first two rounds, with some big names dropping out ahead of moving day as a result of their struggles.
While a field of 156 players took to the greens and fairways of Pennsylvania on Thursday, only the top 83 made it to the weekend’s play. DeChambeau was one of the more unfortunate titans from the world of golf who was dumped out of the tournament after just two rounds. The two-time US Open champion had his work cut out for him headed into Friday’s round, given he finished six over par on Thursday.
And while the 32-year-old, as well as golf fans watching on worldwide will have hoped for a late resurgence, the comeback never quite came for the Crushers GC captain – bowing out in T114 with an overall score of SEVEN over-par. DeChambeau wasn’t the only big hitter who struggled with the pace of the Pennsylvanian course, however.
Fan-favourite Fleetwood finished his second round with an overall score of five over par, making the trip back to the UK empty handed as his long wait for major glory rolls on. Flying Scotsman MacIntyre joined him, finishing with the same overall score following a catastrophic second round of 75.
Elsewhere, Team Europe Ryder Cup hero Viktor Hovland ended his tournament at six over par on Friday, as did his team-mate, Sepp Straka. Contrastingly, a number of tournament favourites remain in the running to lift the coveted PGA Championship title this weekend.
Scottie Scheffler will hope to defend his title from last year by the end of Sunday’s play, and is well placed to do so – currently T9 in the standings thanks to an overall score of two under par. Cameron Young and Justin Thomas also hold the exact same score and position headed into moving day.
Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, recovered from a horror opening round to record a three under par 67 during Friday’s session to move him to T30 and back in contention at one over par. American trio Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka are both alongside McIlroy at one over, while Jon Rahm is T16 at one under and Shane Lowry is T68 at four over.
