The LIV Golf league is set to lose its multi-billion-dollar backing from Saudi Arabia, with over 50 stars impacted. New appointments have been announced as the rebel league aims to find new financial partners for the future.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) plan to withdraw their funding for the league at the end of the season. A new independent board has been established and will be led by Gene Davis and Jon Zinman. The duo aim to “guide the league through its next phase.” LIV Golf chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan is also expected to step down from his position. As a result, the future of the tour has been thrown up in the air with a number of top golfers affected by the news.

Bryson DeChambeau was one of the first stars to turn his back on the PGA Tour for the financial allure of LIV, with Phil Mickelson joining his fellow American in heading to the breakaway league. Jon Rahm was eventually persuaded to join LIV, but now these three stars will face a period of uncertainty in their careers.

That is despte LIV Golf chief executive Scott O’Neil saying earlier this month that the tour was fully funded through to the end of the season.

“It’s just not the way the world works. We have commitments to have this being a going concern.

“The reality is, you’re funded through the season, and then you work like crazy as a business to create a business and a business plan to keep us going.

“But that’s not different from any other private equity-funded business in the history of mankind.”
