Gareth Southgate’s demands before replacing Ruben Amorim at Man Utd | Football | Sport

INEOS has now decided to end the Amorim project, sacking him after a 14-month stint at M16. The club released a statement confirming his dismissal, expressing optimism that this change will enhance their Premier League performance this season, with European football still very much in sight.

As early as October last year, when Amorim was still in charge, it was reported that former England manager Southgate was considering the managerial role at Old Trafford.

However, Southgate might have reservations about accepting the role and would require a four-year commitment to turn things around, something the board may not be prepared to offer him or any other candidate.

According to The Sun, insiders indicated that the lifelong United supporter would need assurances that the top brass would commit to any long-term objectives.

The report also suggests that Southgate is worried that the board would expect immediate results, whereas his approach focuses on steady success over an extended period. The 55-year-old has been without a job since resigning as England manager after leading the Three Lions to second place at Euro 2024, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final.

However, the former Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough star-turned-manager has been linked with a managerial position at United ever since Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a minority stake in the club in February 2024.

Southgate isn’t the only manager being touted as a potential successor to Amorim. Oliver Glasner of Palace and Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler are rumoured to be among the favourites.

Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane and Barcelona icon Xavi Hernandez have also been mentioned as possible candidates.

Confirming Amorim’s exit in a statement released on Monday, United announced: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as head coach of Manchester United. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and he led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it’s the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.

“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
