When asked following his 6-4 6-4 6-4 semi-final defeat to Sinner if he intends to return to Wimbledon next year as a 40-year-old, Djokovic replied: “I would like to, at least one more time. Let’s see.”

He added: “I’m disappointed. Of course, I wanted to win Wimbledon. That’s the reason why I’m still pushing myself so hard.

“But I just lost to a better player. I have to accept it. Obviously tough one. Once you get out of the court, it’s tough one to kind of accept. But it is what it is.

“I’m not upset with myself. I don’t think I’ve done too much wrong. I was just a level or two worse than he is.”

When addressed as the ‘best returner that has ever been’ Djokovic corrected and said: “Was. Was. That’s the reality. Was. Was.”

Such comments have left many questioning whether Djokovic should retire, as he appears to be drifting further away from Sinner and, when healthy again, Carlos Alcaraz.

He currently holds the record jointly with Margaret Court, both on 24, but Djokovic would etch himself further into tennis history with another Major win.

But he has not picked up a piece of the silverware he desires since the 2023 US Open.

Since earning that elusive 24th title he has reached two finals, Wimbledon in 2024 and the Australian Open this year, both times losing to Alcaraz.

But even with the Spanish star missing Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the past few months, Djokovic has been unable to take advantage.

He was dismantled by Sinner last week and the French Open title went to Alexander Zverev, after Djokovic and Sinner crashed out in the third and second rounds respectively.
