Bruno Fernandes has revealed how his wife was instrumental in his choice to remain at Manchester United last summer despite speculation linking him with a possible move to Saudi Arabia.
Fernandes was strongly linked with a departure from Old Trafford last summer, with the Saudi Pro League cited as a potential destination.
The United captain has been crucial in helping steer the club to a position where they are now amongst the favourites to secure Champions League qualification under the leadership of interim head coach Michael Carrick.
Fernandes has netted eight goals and contributed 19 assists in all competitions this season, including 18 in the Premier League, which has enabled the Red Devils to climb to third position in the overall standings with five matches remaining.
Last summer saw considerable speculation that Fernandes might have been heading towards the exit door at United, with clubs in the Saudi Pro League purportedly in contention to sign the Portugal international, reports The Mirror.
Instead, the 31-year-old opted to stay at United and is on the verge of helping guide the club back to Champions League qualification.
Fernandes was appearing on The Wayne Rooney Show for BBC Sport, where he discussed his decision to remain at United, which happened following a conversation with his wife.
“I stayed because I thought I still had something that I can give back to the club,” Fernandes said on the podcast.
“Obviously the Saudi situation, with the money… there was a lot. The good thing I have in my family is that my wife is pretty down to earth like me.
“We’re very aware that we don’t want to be the richest person in the world. We just want to be the ones that have achieved the dreams they had and live a good life with their kids and trying to be as successful as possible.
“The words of my wife were like, ‘have you achieved your dreams? Have you achieved everything you wanted?’
“And that small thing she said made me understand that she’s on the same page as me. Let’s keep trying and see where this takes me.”
