Carlos Alcaraz’s two-word reaction says it all after amateur beats Jannik Sinner | Tennis | Sport
The concept was simple: players went head-to-head in a straight knockout bracket, where the victor needed to win just a single point to progress. Some of the sport’s biggest names, such as Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek were all involved, but in the end, the bumper prize went to Smith from Sydney.
Having initially been introduced last year, the 2026 edition certainly garnered more attention, with the 1 Point Slam capturing the imagination of the sport. Tennis ace Taylor Fritz took to social media to rave about the contest, with Alcaraz also commenting on the winner, simply stating: “Jordan Smith,” on X.
To get to the million-dollar cheque, Smith came through some high-quality opponents, including Aussie rules star Bailey Smith – no relation – in the first round, Laura Pigossi and then reigning Aussie Open champion Sinner. He kept it going with wins over Amanda Anisimova and Pedro Martinez, before facing WTA No. 117 Joanna Garland in a fairytale final.
When asked about what he’d do with the prize money, he explained: “Definitely try and buy a house, the Sydney prices are expensive! Maybe half a house? Who knows, an apartment? We’ll see how it goes.”
Before going on to add: “I’m kind of speechless. I’ll definitely buy a house with my girlfriend. Coming in tonight, I was just happy to win one point. I was nervous, but I enjoyed being out here. Was a great experience.”
Smith’s local tennis club will also earn a prize of $50,000, while fellow amateur Alec Reverente also bagged himself a new car, courtesy of the competition sponsor, Kia. Whereas the overall mood around the event has been a positive one, with widespread praise for the pre-tournament showpiece.
And it appears to have been given the green light by the professionals too, with Gauff remarking on social media: “Great event! lol I said when it started I hoped an amateur won !! Congrats Jordan. soooo cold.”
