BBC to snub World Cup final show as Justin Bieber announcement made | Football | Sport
Bieber will stand amongst the most prominent figures at the centrepiece of the tournament’s finale, performing alongside Madonna, Shakira, BTS, Burna Boy, Gustavo Dudamel, and Coldplay, who have all signed up for the half-time extravaganza on 19th July. The star-studded performance, scheduled for 11 minutes during the World Cup final interval, is due to unfold at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Yet viewers following the match on the BBC will probably miss out on seeing it.
According to The Times, the BBC intends to maintain its traditional broadcasting structure – pre-match discussion, first-half action, half-time evaluation, followed by the second half – rather than switching to the entertainment spectacle. ITV is believed to be adopting a comparable approach.
All funds generated from the interval performance will go directly to the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which seeks to raise £74.5million ($100 million) to expand access to quality education and football for youngsters worldwide.
The fund has already secured over £37.4m ($50million) and continues to expand, with $1 from every ticket sold for FIFA World Cup 2026 fixtures being contributed throughout the competition.
Having been specifically chosen for the privilege, Bieber said in a statement: “The FIFA World Cup brings the world together in a way nothing else can. I’m grateful to be part of this Halftime Show, and even more grateful knowing it’s already helping expand access to education for children around the world.”
Following the announcement on Instagram, supporters swamped the comments section with enthusiasm ahead of his upcoming appearance. One admirer wrote, “Yes! Do your thing bro!”. Another fan added, “YESSSSSSS MY FAV CAN’T WAIT,” While a third wrote, “THANK YOU, MY LORD JESUS CHRIST. NOW ANNOUNCE THE TOUR.”
The revelation comes after Bieber’s presence at the World Cup opening ceremony, with the artist having closely followed this year’s competition. Beyond his participation in this year’s spectacle, he recently used Instagram to throw his support behind his home nation Canada.
Sharing an image of the squad’s crest, the Baby singer wrote: “SEND YOUR LOVE AND PRAYERS TO TEAM CANADA. PLAYING NOW #fifaworldcup2026.”
The appearance represents Bieber’s first time on stage since performing at Coachella. The star has previously withdrawn from demanding touring commitments due to previous health struggles, including Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. His most recent major concert tour was the Justice World Tour, which took place in 2022.
