Inside Yellowstone star’s forgotten role in ‘wonderful’ rom-com | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Yellowstone fans may be unaware of one of Kelly Reilly’s earliest roles in a trilogy of forgotten romantic-comedies.

The British actress has achieved international acclaim for her role as Beth Dutton in the hit Western drama starring Kevin Costner on Paramount+.

Reilly will be reprising the role alongside Cole Hauser as Beth’s cowboy husband Rip Wheeler in the upcoming spin-off, The Dutton Ranch, slated for release later this year.

Away from the Yellowstone franchise, she has also taken on an even darker role in the upcoming Sky detective thriller, Under Salt Marsh, set in the fictional Welsh town of Morfa Halen and filmed entirely in Wales.

Before her highly anticipated return to screens, fans have been rediscovering Reilly’s award-winning role in The Spanish Apartment trilogy, which has a passionate cult following in France.

The actress portrays Wendy in all three films that follow Xavier (played by Romain Duris), a French student who moves into a flatshare in Barcelona inhabited by a multi-cultural group of fellow students.

Wendy, a British student, eventually strikes up a romantic relationship with Xavier.

All directed by Cédric Klapisch, the first film was released in 2002 and explores the students’ lives and friendships in Barcelona, while its sequel, Russian Dolls (2005), fast-forwards five years to a reunion at the wedding of Wendy’s brother, William (Kevin Bishop).

2013 sequel Chinese Puzzle follows the couple after their split, with Xavier now in his 40s and struggling to raise their two children.

Also starring acclaimed Amelie actress Audrey Tautou, the trilogy is unfortunately tough to come by on streaming but is well worth seeking out for anyone keen to explore Reilly’s career outside of her role in Yellowstone.

However, she recently returned to the series back in 2023 in Klapisch’s Prime Video follow-up Greek Salad. Reilly and Duris take on minor roles this time around as the eight-part drama follows Wendy and Xavier’s children, Tom (Alyosha Schneider) and Mia (Megan Northam).

The star took to Instagram upon its release to pay tribute to the director and cast. Alongside a selfie of herself with the director, she wrote: “20 years ago I got to work on a film called L’auberge Espagnole.

“5 years later we all returned for Les Poupees Russes. 10 years ago for Casse tete Chinois. Last year we came back for Salad Grecque just out on Amazon Prime.

“How wonderful to work with you @cedklap over all these years,” she continued. “And to the actors I have been getting older with, what a total joy it’s been!

“@romainduris Cecile de France and @iamkevbish. Now we hand it over to the kids, they are luminous @megan.northam @aliocha.s.”

While she was already an established theatre and TV actress, the films helped raise Reilly’s international profile considerably, as her performance in the second film won her a César Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Reilly also picked up the the Chopard Award at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival, boosting her status as an actress to watch out for well over a decade before landing her role as Beth.

Yellowstone is available to stream on Paramount+.
