French President Emmanuel Macron has hit back at Donald Trump’s latest trade threats, branding the proposed tariffs on European nations as “unacceptable.” The sharp rebuke comes after the US President threatened to impose significant levies on several European countries unless the United States is allowed to purchase Greenland.
“France is committed to the sovereignty and independence of nations, in Europe as elsewhere,” he says in a post on social media.
“This guides our choices. It underpins our attachment to the United Nations and to our Charter.” Warning that no intimidation or threat will influence” them, The French President added that France “will continue to support Ukraine“.
He continued: “It is also on this basis that we decided to take part in the exercise organized by Denmark in Greenland. We fully assume this decision, because security in the Arctic and at the outer edges of our Europe is at stake.
“No intimidation or threat will influence us—neither in Ukraine, nor in Greenland, nor anywhere else in the world when we are confronted with such situations.
“Tariff threats are unacceptable and have no place in this context. Europeans will respond in a united and coordinated manner should they be confirmed.
“We will ensure that European sovereignty is upheld. It is in this spirit that I will engage with our European partners.”
This cmes after Donald Trump announced that the UK and other European countries will be hit with a 10% tariff “on any and all goods” sent to the US from February 1 until a deal is reached to buy Greenland.
In a lengthy Truth Social post, the US President said: “Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland have journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown”, adding: “This is a very dangerous situation for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Planet.”
Trump stated that these will stay in effect until “a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland” and added that they will rise to 25% on June 1.
