Iran’s largest cemetery ‘prepares graves for US troops’ | World | News
Iran is reportedly preparing to bury the bodies of dead American soldiers should a US attack on the country happen, according to local media. Mehr News Agency, a semi-official news agency sponsored by the Iranian government, said – citing the Behesht Zahra Organisation – the move is part of pre-emptive preparations as tensions with the US heighten. The bodies would reportedly be buried just outside of Tehran, the Iranian capital.
The Behesht Zahra Organisation, which manages Iran’s largest cemetery, is reported to have prepared a site capable of containing several thousand graves, specifically in the event of US military intervention. This comes amid an escalating back and forth between Tehran and Washington, with Donald Trump threatening military action if his demands are not met.
On Wednesday, USS Abraham Lincoln and the US Navy carrier strike group continued to travel towards Iran.
While on the red carpet for his wife’s film “Melania”, the US president urged Tehran to stop persuing nuclear weapons and killing protestors who have spoken out against the regime.
He said: “We have a lot of very big, very powerful ships sailing to Iran right now. And it would be great if we didn’t have to use them.
Iran, which maintains its nuclear programme is just for civilian purposes, says it’s prepared to come to the negotiating table, but any talks must be “fair and equitable” and not take place “under the shadow of threats”, foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said. He claimed Tehran has “no problem with negotiations”.
He added: “They must certainly set aside their threats and change their approach toward a fair and equitable negotiation, as Mr Trump himself said in his post.”
Tasnim stated that no photographs are being released in order to safeguard “military secrets.”
This also comes as the Iranian regime has been shaken by protests across the country over the past weeks, which have led the IRGC to carry out a violent repression.
