Anthony Gordon ‘ready to leave Newcastle’ as Arsenal and Liverpool on alert | Football | Sport
Anthony Gordon is reportedly open to leaving Newcastle this summer, as Arsenal consider a high-profile transfer move. Gordon, 25, has been linked with the Gunners in recent months, while German heavyweights Bayern Munich have also emerged as potential admirers.
It was reported earlier this week that Bayern are preparing a £55million offer. Newcastle, however, would demand significantly more for the England international, who wants his future settled before the World Cup, which kicks off in June. The Telegraph claim that although Gordon hasn’t notified Newcastle of his wish to leave, he will pursue a transfer during the summer window.
Arsenal are understood to have a longstanding interest in the winger, who has featured in their recruitment discussions.
Liverpool, meanwhile, could rekindle their interest after coming close to signing Gordon in 2024, shortly before he signed a new long-term deal at Newcastle. Despite having come through Everton’s academy, he would relish the opportunity to join their local rivals.
The hierarchy at St James’ Park are preparing themselves for bids when the window opens, and not solely for Gordon. Key figures such as Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall have all been linked with moves to other Premier League clubs.
Newcastle lost talismanic striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool last summer and have suffered the consequences following a protracted transfer saga. Eddie Howe’s side have dropped to 14th in the table with six matches remaining and appear unlikely to secure European football as they have managed in each of the past three seasons.
Gordon has nonetheless remained a shining light for the Magpies, netting 17 goals and contributing five assists. Ten of those strikes arrived in the Champions League, with the former Everton forward announcing himself on Europe’s grandest stage.
Arsenal brought in three attackers last summer, but could reshape their frontline once again this coming window. Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard have all been mentioned as potential departures from the Emirates in order to finance fresh recruits.
Gordon isn’t the sole forward on Arsenal’s radar, however. The Gunners have been linked with Paris Saint-Germain sensation Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez in what could shape up to be another lavish summer of expenditure.
Much could hinge on how this season concludes, with Liverpool in danger of falling short of Champions League qualification. Arsenal and Bayern, meanwhile, could feature in this year’s final and clinch their respective domestic league titles.
