‘Best movie ever made’ is a 1993 war ‘masterpiece’ | Films | Entertainment
There are some films that people still talk about decades after they were first released. And every year, movie fans debate which title deserves to be called the greatest of all time. But one film from the early 1990s continues to appear near the top of almost every list.
Many viewers still describe it as a masterpiece that has never been matched. The movie won multiple Oscars, earned huge praise from critics and remains one of director Steven Spielberg‘s most celebrated works.
That film is Schindler’s List. Released in 1993, the historical drama stars Liam Neeson as German industrialist Oskar Schindler, alongside Ralph Fiennes and Ben Kingsley.
Based on real events during the Second World War, the film tells the story of Schindler and the lives he helped save.
Spielberg directed and co-produced the movie, which was filmed largely in Poland and shot primarily in black and white to give it a timeless feel.
The film was a huge success both critically and commercially. Made on a budget of around $22million, it went on to earn more than $322million worldwide.
It also picked up seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, while winning seven BAFTAs and three Golden Globes.
Even today, Schindler’s List holds a 98% critics score and a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Many viewers believe it is one of the greatest films ever made. One person said in a review on Rotten Tomatoes: “No words can describe this masterpiece. It’s the best war film of all time and possible the best film ever.”
Another added: “Greatest film of all time. Deservedly called a masterpiece. Nothing will ever come close to this.”
A third wrote: “I really can’t find the words to describe just how perfect Schindler’s List is. Steven Spielberg is the greatest director of all time, and this movie just proves it once again. After watching this film, it just sat with me, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.”
Someone else commented: “Everyone should watch this touching, unforgettable masterpiece. It is one of those rare films that stays with you forever and forces you to reflect on humanity, cruelty, and compassion.
“Honestly, it should be mandatory viewing. For me, it is the best movie ever made.”
Since its release, the movie has been recognised by the Library of Congress for being culturally and historically significant.
Schindler’s List can be rented or bought on Prime Video.
