London’s best destination has been named – and it might catch you off guard as it’s not Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square or Westminster Abbey which has come out on top.
The capital ranks as one of the most famous and popular cities on the planet, boasting an extraordinary wealth of experiences for visitors and residents alike.
From a buzzing nightlife scene to a dynamic food landscape showcasing flavours from every corner of the globe, there is something to suit every palate – whether you fancy an indulgent Michelin-starred dining experience or a budget-friendly, no-frills meal that is every bit as satisfying.
Add to that world-class shopping and a packed cultural calendar, and it’s easy to see why millions flock there each year.
Art, theatre, live music, comedy, dance and classes of every conceivable kind are readily available to both tourists and Londoners throughout the year.
History and culture enthusiasts are truly spoilt for choice, with iconic institutions such as the Natural History Museum, St Paul’s Cathedral, the British Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum all within easy reach.
Those who prefer the great outdoors can enjoy London Zoo, sweeping green spaces including Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Green Park and St James’s Park, or the breathtaking Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
For market lovers, there’s no shortage of options either, with vibrant destinations such as Camden Lock Market, Borough Market, Leadenhall Market and Portobello Road Market all worth a visit.
Little wonder, then, that a London destination has earned a coveted place in Time Out’s list of “the 14 best places to visit in the UK in 2026” – but which landmark made the cut?
No, it’s not Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, or Tower Bridge. Time Out selected the Strand, the three-quarters of a mile route stretching from Trafalgar Square to Temple Bar, where it transitions into Fleet Street.
Time Out said: “I know what you’re thinking: a single street, one of the best places to go in the entire UK? But the Strand is no ordinary road.

“One of the most ancient and historic streets in London, this single thoroughfare between Westminster and the City boasts enough culture to populate entire towns.”
Of why to visit the Strand in 2026 in particular, Time Out highlighted the extensive range of exhibitions available, alongside a vibrant street theatre programme, plus the “powerhouse of eating, drinking and culture” opportunities on offer.
For those planning a “staycation” across the UK who feel daunted by deciding on a destination, Time Out’s compilation spotlights 14 scenic locations and distinctive towns worthy of exploration.
The storied city of Stirling, situated in central Scotland, took top spot on the list. It’s a captivating and scenic location renowned for its rich heritage.
The traditional market town of Cirencester, commonly considered the “Capital of the Cotswolds”, secured fifth position owing to its harmonious fusion of Roman heritage with diverse independent shopping experiences.
