What happened to Jordan Henderson during England vs Mexico?

  • What initially happened? Jordan Henderson had climbed over the advertising hoardings with his team-mates to sing England’s adopted World Cup anthem, Wonderwall, following the full-time whistle against Mexico. However, when returning to the pitch, Henderson slipped and landed on his arm.
  • What happened next? Henderson was left in a heap on the group, with several of his team-mates attending to him by the side of the pitch. England’s medical staff quickly rushed over to provide assistance, but Henderson was ultimately stretchered off the pitch.
  • What did he actually injure? We don’t know the specific details just yet, but it would appear Henderson suffered a serious injury to his arm. It’s likely Henderson has done something to his wrist or arm, but we’ll have to wait and see for official testing.
  • Is his World Cup over? The early signs would point towards yes. England have a maximum of three matches left at this tournament, with the final in just under two weeks. It’s hard to see Henderson returning to the squad, given how serious the injury looked, but stranger things have happened.
  • Can England replace him? No. Injury replacements can only be made before a team’s opening match in the tournament. It’s how the Three Lions were able to usher in Trevoh Chalobah in place of Tino Livramento following the latter’s injury on the eve of the tournament.
  • What has Thomas Tuchel said? “Not good, not good, next thing is a right defender now with the red card, Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist, it looks really bad.”
  • Who do England play next? Next up for the 1966 winners is a clash against Norway in Miami. Victory in that will see England through to just their second World Cup semi-final since 1990. Their most likely opponents in the semi-finals would be Argentina or Colombia.
