Jordan Henderson set for surgery on sickening injury after England star hospitalised | Football | Sport

The squad had jumped over the advertising hoardings to get closer to the players, but upon returning to the pitch, Henderson lost his footing and fell awkwardly. Medical staff rushed to his assistance, with the Brentford man eventually stretchered off the pitch.

According to The Athletic, Henderson will now undergo surgery to fix the problem following the freak injury from the round-of-16 clash. The alarm bells were initially set off when Thomas Tuchel revealed Henderson had been hospitalised after the game.

He remarked: “I’m sad because Jordan injured his wrist,” England manager Tuchel told reporters post-match. It’s quite serious. He’s in hospital. It doesn’t fit with the rest of the evening. I don’t know the procedure.”

Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham, who scored twice for England during the win, remarked: “He [Henderson] is in a bit of bother, but our medical team have everything under control. I’m not best to give too much detail as I do not know much going on, but everyone was there to support him.”

Despite the freak accident, England will not be able to replace Henderson in the squad, meaning Tuchel will only have a squad of 25 players to choose from. Henderson had only made one appearance at the tournament so far, coming off the bench during England’s win over Panama in the final group game.

For the next match though, England will be without Jarrel Quansah, who picked up a red card midway through the second half. That is unless FIFA decide to suspend the red card, as they did for USMNT star Folarin Balogun.

Commenting afterwards, Tuchel remarked: “I think first of all, to be very clear, that it was not a red card [for Balogun], but VAR got involved and obviously three people from VAR and the referee checked it and were of the opinion it is a yellow card so the decision is made. Who overturns this decision and when and on what grounds? And how far does this go now? It is just strange for me. We just want to have consistency in the decisions.”

He continued: “So, is our yellow card after the first minute against Declan Rice… We can now debate endlessly. I think it is not a yellow card. Do we get this back? Does France get the yellow card back for [Michael] Olise [against Paraguay] which was not a yellow card? Where does this end? I don’t know the rules. I am the wrong person to ask. I will wait and see what’s coming.”

The Three Lions now march on to Miami, where they’ll come up against Norway in the quarter-final of the World Cup. A win against Erling Haaland and co. will see England through to just their second semi-final since 1990.
