The Argentinian press have named areas of the England team that Argentina should look to target in their World Cup semi-final. The two sides are set to compete for a place in the final on Wednesday.

The Three Lions have shown plenty of heart throughout the knockout stages, despite manager Thomas Tuchel wanting more quality from his side after their quarter-final victory over Norway. Goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane have propelled England through the tournament and the duo will once again look to be the match-winners against Argentina. Lionel Messi is arguably even more important to Argentina as the 39-year-old currently tops the World Cup scoring charts alongside Kylian Mbappe. However, Argentina’s recent experience of winning major tournaments is where the team differ from England, as Lionel Scaloni’s team aim to retain the World Cup trophy. Here is a look at how Argentine media assess the England team ahead of the semi-final.

England ‘weaknesses’

ESPN Argentina examines the England “weaknesses” that Argentina could capitalise on. First, the Three Lions’ sluggish starts are emphasised, citing the goal conceded against Norway and instances during the group phase when England failed to “impose their will” in the early stages.

England are also said to display “discomfort” when put under pressure in possession at the back, resulting in significant turnovers against Norway. The article notes that Argentina “presses high” and seeks to “establish themselves in the opposition’s half from the outset”, which could present challenges for England.

Thirdly, it is suggested that Tuchel’s tactical approach demands attack-minded full-backs, which “leaves areas exposed” when England surrender possession. Norway and Mexico both enjoyed spells of success down the flanks, “a consequence of England’s style of play”.

Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane

While lauding both Bellingham and Kane, ESPN underlines the extent to which England depend upon the duo. It is stated that neutralising the England pair represents “one of Argentina’s biggest challenges” but equally presents a possible route to victory.

Finally, it is observed that Tuchel continues to tinker with his starting XI in each fixture as he searches for the ideal combination. By contrast, Argentina face a “different reality”, with every player clear about their role under Scaloni.

Jude Bellingham claim

Reports in Argentina have claimed that Bellingham is battling a shoulder injury ahead of the semi-final. Footage has surfaced of the midfielder clutching his shoulder and upper arm during and following the Norway victory.

TYC Sports reports that Bellingham’s shoulder is being monitored by England’s medical team as the squad prepare to face Argentina. Ole reports that the issue arose following a collision with a Norwegian player.

Bellingham previously underwent shoulder surgery, which kept him out of the beginning of last season. However, there has been no suggestion of an injury to Bellingham from the England camp.

Lionel Messi record

The semi-final will be the first time Messi has faced England in his international career. The two nations have not crossed paths since 2005, despite their storied history of classic World Cup encounters.

While Messi may never have faced the Three Lions before, Argentinian outlet El Grafico highlights the Argentina captain’s impressive record against English opposition. Over 36 matches against top Premier League clubs, Messi has registered 19 victories, nine draws and eight defeats, netting 27 goals. Two of those fixtures include Barcelona’s triumphs over Manchester United in the 2009 and 2011 Champions League finals.
