Their arrivals have, in part, been determined by Carrick’s willingness to let Casemiro leave on a free transfer. The Brazilian is expected to move to MLS and four other stars are heading out the door with him. They are Rasmus Hojlund, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Andre Onana.
Malacia, Sancho and Casemiro’s deals all ran down this summer, with the latter announcing his decision in January. Meanwhile, Hojlund made his loan spell at Napoli permanent after the Serie A club activated his £38million release clause.
Onana also extended his loan at Trabzonspor for another season after helping the Super Lig outfit finish third and claim the Turkish Cup. This means that, to date, Carrick has permitted five first-team players to leave and with three new senior additions confirmed, the club’s overhaul is genuinely gathering pace.
Following his exit from United, Malacia has yet to secure a new club and remains on the free-agent market. Celtic and Napoli were previously linked with interest.
Sancho has been linked with a possible return to Borussia Dortmund following an impressive loan spell from United in 2024. Casemiro appears set to link up with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, having also conducted discussions with MLS outfit LA Galaxy.
With these five players removed from the wage bill, clearing a substantial £830,000-a-week, Carrick can concentrate on further additions that will strengthen the squad. Midfielder Santos became the first summer signing, committing to a five-year contract worth an initial £48m.
Following that was a shrewd acquisition from Leeds in goalkeeper Darlow, who arrived on a free transfer. The club bolstered their midfield options with former Aston Villa star Tielemans, secured for a £35m fee.
Winger Tynan Thompson has also been brought in from Spurs and is expected to divide his time between the senior side and the Under-21s.
Yet United remain keen on several stars to continue their reconstruction, including Bournemouth’s Alex Scott.
Scott has turned down a fresh contract at Bournemouth, which has undoubtedly strengthened United’s prospects of securing him this summer. The Cherries anticipate the midfielder will stay at the club this year, but Carrick remains determined.
