Novak Djokovic ‘surprised’ by Queen Camilla’s comment at Wimbledon | Tennis | Sport
The pair crossed paths at SW19 last year ahead of the Serbian ace’s quarter-final match against Flavio Cobolli. The seven-time Wimbledon champion produced an impressive four-set victory on Centre Court. The match had been preceded by a meeting with the Queen, who left a lasting impression on the tennis icon. After winning in front of the royal in attendance, Djokovic revealed he had been taken aback by a question from the royal but remained tight-lipped over the contents of their conversation.
“I prefer not sharing that. It’s private,” Djokovic said when asked about his interaction with Camilla. “We had a nice exchange. I was actually surprised with her comment and a question that she asked. It was non-tennis related. She was very pleasant. Very, very pleasant.
“Of course, it’s a great honour and privilege for me to be able to shake hands with the Queen of England. I’ve had that honour, as well, 2010 with the late Queen Elizabeth.
“It’s obviously a phenomenal occasion for Wimbledon to host the Royal Family. Wimbledon has traditionally attracted the Royal Family. It’s beautiful to see there’s still an interest for our sport. Of course, it’s important for all of us.”
During their conversation, Camilla was overheard saying: “Oh what a treat, how nice to see you. It’s lovely to see you.” The Queen also mentioned she had her “fingers crossed” for him, wiith Djokovic replying: “It will be my great honour. I appreciate it.”
His meeting with Camilla came a year after Djokovic had issued a heartfelt message to Princess Kate after the 2024 Wimbledon final. The Princess of Wales, who presented him with his runner-up award, was making a rare public appearance after sharing her cancer diagnosis in March 2024. The All England Club patron later entered remission in January 2025.
“Yes, it was of course a privilege to be in her presence again,” Djokovic said of his conversation with Princess Kate. “I’ve said to her that it is very nice to see her in good health. She seems to be in good health.
“That’s obviously very positive news for everyone in this country but also for Wimbledon, for Championships to have Her Royal Highness here, of course with her family members. It’s amazing. It’s incredible support they’ve been giving over the years to this tournament.”
Djokovic is aiming to equal Roger Federer’s eight Wimbledon titles, which would also give him an outright record 25th Grand Slam championship. The 39-year-old last triumphed at SW19 in 2022 and faces defending champion Sinner in the semi-finals.
