Alexander Zverev shows true colours to Arthur Fery after five-word comment | Tennis | Sport

Arthur Fery’s Wimbledon conqueror Alexander Zverev tipped the Brit to have a long career on the ATP Tour after their semi-final. However, he couldn’t resist a joke after his straight sets win, telling BBC interviewer Rishi Persad: “It was okay, I guess” when asked to sum up his performance. Zverev, who won the French Open this year to claim a first Grand Slam title of his career, won 7-6, 6-2, 6-4 against wildcard Fery. The victory sent him through to another major final, where he will meet either Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner.

“It was okay i guess!” Zverev said. “No, it was amazing. To be honest i have to give credit to two things. First of all Arthur, an unbelievable player, I think he’s going to be a senior citizen on our tour because i think he’s going to play on this tour for 15-plus years and is going to have great results. I think this was just the beginning of his career and I think he’s going to do amazing things for this sport.”

The German continued by thanking the Wimbledon crowd, having anticipated an audience almost entirely rooting for his opponent. “And then for me the second thing is something that’s incredible here…yes I know that 99.99 percent of the stadium was wanting Arthur to win but it was still such an incredible atmosphere, it was such a fair crowd as well,” he said.

“I enjoyed every second of it even though… and for me i think a lot of stadiums in the world, a lot of crowds in the world can take an example from this crowd. I think for me it’s one of the best crowds to play tennis in front of.”

Before this year, Zverev’s best performance at Wimbledon was a run to the fourth round. He has found a new gear this time, though, dropping just two sets en route to the final.

“It’s amazing. This grand slam has always been the one i struggle with the most and all of a sudden i’m in the final of Wimbledon,” he said.

“So i’m incredibly happy and incredibly proud as well, of the team, of everyone who was involved. But we’ve got one more match to go on sunday and that’s what the focus is on.”
