Arsenal stars in tears as Gabriel and Eze consoled after PSG defeat | Football | Sport
The two Gunners stars were visibly distraught following their costly misses, which saw PSG crowned back-to-back Champions League winners. Gabriel fluffed the decisive penalty, blazing his effort over the crossbar, while Eze dragged his attempt wide of the post. Noni Madueke was also seen in tears while Piero Hincapie was another visibly upset on the pitch.
PSG players flooded onto the pitch in celebration, yet Brazilian defender Marquinhos made a beeline for his international team-mate to offer Gabriel some comfort. His Arsenal colleagues also rallied around to support the 28-year-old, while others turned their attention to consoling Eze.
Speaking on TNT Sports commentary, Ally McCoist said: “I’m gutted for him, absolutely gutted for him. I mention something that we saw there that was absolutely fantastic, as soon as he missed it, do you know who the first person was up to him?”
“Marquinhos, his Brazilian centre-back pal and gave him the biggest cuddle you’ve ever seen, it’ll mean nothing to him at this moment in time, but what a touch it was.”
Kai Havertz had handed Arsenal the advantage after just five minutes, before Ousmane Dembele drew PSG level from the penalty spot midway through the second half. Neither side could find a breakthrough during extra time, and Arsenal will feel aggrieved that they were denied a late penalty when Noni Madueke was brought down by Nuno Mendes inside the PSG box.
PSG landed the first psychological blow of the penalty shoot-out by winning the coin toss, with the spot-kicks taken in front of their supporters at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
Eze dragged his effort wide before David Raya handed Arsenal a lifeline by keeping out Mendes’ attempt.
With the shoot-out level at 3-3, Lucas Beraldo sent Raya the wrong way before Gabriel blazed over, and Arsenal’s hopes of complementing their Premier League title with a first-ever Champions League triumph came to a devastating end.
