The Centre Court crowd booed after Arthur Fery was informed that he will face Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon semi-finals. Fery completely outplayed world No.10 Flavio Cobolli to cause another big upset in the quarter-finals. Wildcard Fery dumped the ninth seed out in straight sets to continue his magical run at SW19 in a 6-4, 7-6, 6-0 triumph. The French-born 23-year-old is only the fourth British player to reach the final four since 2000, following Tim Henman, two-time champion Andy Murray and Cameron Norrie.
And he is just the second wildcard to reach the semis after 2001 champion Goran Ivanisevic. Sunday’s final also falls on the same day as Fery’s 24th birthday as he dreams of making history. Fery was informed at the end of his post-match interview on court that he will face recent French Open champion Zverev in his next match on Friday, with the crowd responding with boos. Fery simply smiled without saying a word as the interview came to an end while the fans made it clear Zverev can expect a partisan atmosphere when the two go head-to-head.
The Brit said on court: “It seems to get better and better every match. No, I just can’t believe it. It’s incredible playing on Centre Court for the second time, second win, I can’t believe it.
“I played Flavio earlier this year in Australia and I beat him. That was a boost of confidence and I knew that I could do it even though it’s my first time in the quarter-finals. He’s done it before in a Grand Slam but that gave me a little boost of confidence. I just kept going. I was very nervous beforehand but kept going until the finish line.
“I’m definitely not [calm] on the inside! That last game I felt emotions that I hadn’t experienced before in my life. I think it’s the same up there. It’s unbelievable to share it with those guys. It’s a great bunch of guys. I’m so happy.”
Asked what he’ll now do tonight and tomorrow to distract himself from the noise and concentrate on his semi-final, Fery said: “I don’t know, I’ve never been in this position before! I guess it’s going to be the first time and we’ll figure it out as we go.
“I’m just going to keep going. I’ve been doing a great job for the past 10 days and I’ll do the same thing and see where that takes me.”

Zverev defeated Taylor Fritz on Court 1 in straight sets at the same time Fery’s victory was confirmed. The German world No.3, who has also never played in the semis at Wimbledon before, told the crowd: “It’s okay you guys can all be for Fery, it’s totally fine, I understand it. I don’t have a problem with it!
“I hope good for me and not so good for everyone else. I think it’s going to be an exciting day for both of us, first time in semi-finals at Wimbledon for both of us. For him it’s a Fery-tale story, for Arthur Fery, see what I did there?! Very clever.
“But I have to trust myself and trust my tennis and hopefully I can show a good performance and we’ll see what happens.”
Fery started this tournament ranked 114th in the world but stands to rise to near the top 50 after beating Damian Dzumhur, Otto Virtanen, Zizou Bergs, Grigor Dimitrov and now Cobolli.
He will now go home with at least £900,000 while beating Zverev and reaching the final would guarantee the current British No.2 £1.8million. The winner of Sunday’s final will receive a cool £3.6m, with defending champion Jannik Sinner taking on seven-time Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic in the other semi.
