Arthur Fery’s opponent breaks down in tears and walks out of Wimbledon press conference | Tennis | Sport
Zizou Bergs broke down in tears and had to leave his press conference after losing to Arthur Fery at Wimbledon. The Belgian squandered 4-1 leads in the fourth and fifth sets to crash out after a marathon four-and-a-half hour battle.
Fery remains Britain’s sole representative in the singles draws after pulling off the biggest win of his career. The 23-year-old suffered from three nosebleeds during the match which appeared to upset his opponent’s rhythm.
When Bergs was quizzed on what he made of the match, he said: “Crazy or the worst, you can decide.” And when he was asked how his emotions held up, he began to sob. The world No. 37 left the room in tears before returning and saying: “You feel you put yourself in many positions to be better, to win the match, and for some reason it doesn’t want to fall on my side today and he was just playing better when it mattered so I’m afraid there is little to add to it than to say that he deserved to win.”
He reserved one final note to abstain Fery from any blame for his nosebleeds, added: “No [I’m not frustrated by the nosebleeds, it’s OK.”
On the flip side, Fery was delighted to have come from behind in both of the final two sets. The British No.3 said: I was just trying to back my fighting spirit and just, yeah, use that to my advantage and just try and base my whole game around that. Just keep going.
“I knew that he maybe could get a little shaky when he was getting close to winning the match, as well. I don’t think he’s made the fourth round of a slam either. Yeah, just trying to keep fighting, keep calm, and just play.”
Fery faces the winner of Grigor Dimitrov vs Matteo Berrettini in the fourth round on Monday. He added: “Yeah, I’ve practiced with both of them. I don’t know either of them well. Obviously two very established players. They’ve had great careers. So it’s going to be, yeah, a great challenge for me to play one of those guys.
“I’m looking forward to it. I feel confident in myself. I feel confident in the fact that I can rival-ize with them and put a good performance in.”
