A bank has launched a new feature on its app to save users money. The feature, which uses AI technology, aims to make managing cash simpler, allowing people to split bills and pay invoices by uploading photos.

According to Zopa Bank, research shows that 31% of Brits overpay on shared bills as they’re too polite to have an awkward conversation. The data revealed that 44% of 25-34 year-olds and 42% of 18-24 year-olds regularly end up paying more than they have to in order to avoid splitting restaurant bills or group holiday payments precisely. As a result, the average person loses up to £240 a year on average.

The new Zopa app feature allows people to upload a picture of a receipt before the AI technology divides the cost, explaining who ordered what, and settles the equal payments in seconds. Users are also able to upload a photo of an invoice before Zopa automatically creates the associated payee and facilitates the payment.

Customers can send money anywhere using their voice or the chat feature. The transfer is then completed after passing two-factor authentication.

Data shows that 30% of Brits admit to saying “don’t worry about it” when they actually do care about overpaying for a bill. Meanwhile, the process of settling shared costs can take weeks, with 38% admitting they’ve had to chase friends or family for repayments.

The research shows that 54% of Brits would use a banking app feature that allows them to split bills and request money using voice or one-tap commands, without having to do the chasing. The feature is now available to all Biscuit current account customers.

Merve Ferrero, chief strategy officer at Zopa Bank, said: “Talking about money with friends and loved ones still feels incredibly uncomfortable for many people, particularly for younger Brits balancing social lives with tighter budgets and rising everyday costs.”

“For many, asking to be paid back feels awkward or confrontational, meaning they often stay quiet and absorb costs they can’t necessarily afford. Over time, those unresolved moments can quietly build into real financial and emotional strain.

“We’ve seen that people are looking for easier, more natural ways to manage shared spending and repayments, which is why we’ve added new bill splitting and repayment features into the Zopa app – helping to remove the awkwardness from money conversations without putting relationships at risk.”
