BBC deliver Wimbledon update as Emma Raducanu pulls out at last minute | Tennis | Sport
BBC Breakfast offered a new update on Emma Raducanu after she confirmed an injury has forced her withdrawal from this year’s Wimbledon. The 23-year-old had been scheduled to begin her campaign on Monday (June 29) against Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic on Court One but later announced on social media she would be pulling out.
During Monday’s edition of BBC Breakfast — hosted by Jon Kay and Sally Nugent — the pair crossed live to John Watson at Wimbledon for the latest update. He told viewers: “The great British summer is in full swing, it is that time of year again, the opening day of the Wimbledon Championships at the All Club.
“But there will be a notable absentee with Britain’s Emma Raducanu pulling out late last night on the eve of the tournament. She suffered another injury setback, which really has been a big story for her ever since that dramatic victory at the US Open five years ago in New York. She’s got a stress fracture in her lower right leg.
“She announced that decision at 10 o’clock last night, just hours after telling a journalist that she planned to play. A big disappointment for her and all of those tennis fans who will be gathering there at Wimbledon this morning.” Taking to Instagram, Raducanu revealed she had been medically advised to withdraw from competition.
In a lengthy statement, she said: “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but sadly I’ve had to withdraw from this year’s Wimbledon.I’ve done everything possible to try and get to the start line tomorrow, but after a final scan tonight, the niggle I’ve been managing has developed into a stress fracture, and I’ve been medically advised to stop pushing through.
“Playing at Wimbledon, in front of a home crowd, means everything to me, so this is really difficult to process.” She went on to express her gratitude for the outpouring of support and encouragement she had received. The former US open champion signed off by telling fans she was looking forward to seeing them upon her return.
It has been a challenging first half of 2026 for Raducanu with injury and illness preventing her from competing in a number tournaments. She was able to play at The Queen’s Club earlier this month and went on to reach the final before being beaten by Donna Vekic.
Cam Norrie, Jack Draper and Katie Boulter are other Brits in action over the coming weeks that home supporters will be able to cheer on instead. Tennis legend and former Wimbledon champion Andy Murray will also be in SW19 as he begins his coaching role with Draper
