Brit, 52, drowns on Spanish beach after helping save children in stormy sea | UK | News

A 52 year old British man tragically drowned on the Costa Blanca after heroically helping to save two young children.

In the same incident, a 46 year old Polish man also lost his life on the crowded holiday beach in the Valencia region.

At one point, it was feared that up to eight people had drowned in the horrifying event at Playa de La Roqueta de Guardamar de Segura by Calle Peru and Hotel Casablanca.

Beachgoers bravely rushed into the water to rescue two children, aged six and seven, today.

The weather conditions were reportedly severe, with strong winds producing gusts of 60 kilometres per hour.

Spanish newspaper Informacion. es reported that during a few minutes of chaos, it was feared that eight people had lost their lives, but all except for the British and Polish men were accounted for.

A man and a woman who assisted in the rescue were taken to hospital in Torrevieja with a reserved prognosis, but their lives are not in danger.

Spanish newspapers reported that this stretch of beach did not have lifeguards until mid-June, and another man drowned just the day before.

Reports suggest that the two children who were saved had been playing in the sea when they got caught in the strong currents.

No details have been released about the British man, so it is unknown whether he was on holiday or lived in Spain.
