All the key storylines and results after qualifying for the British Grand Prix

Q1

  • Isack Hadjar was a surprise name at the top of the timesheet with a lovely lap quicker than anyone else managed.
  • George Russell was in trouble for a while after locking up and driving onto the gravel, coming to a stop when the nose of his car hit the barrier. Luckily, he was able to get it going again and there was no more damage done than a broken front wing. And there was time for him to complete a lap which put him into Q2.
  • Pierre Gasly angered Lance Stroll who accused him of impeding and yelled on the radio: “What the f*** is he doing?” Gasly will have to report to the stewards after the session to explain himself.
  • Aston Martin were the bottom two again, with the team waiting for upgrades in Budapest before they might be competitive again.
  • Franco Colapinto was stuck in 19th after spinning off at Maggotts and Becketts on his final run, while the two Cadillacs and also the Haas of Esteban Ocon were the others in the bottom six.

Q2

  • Max Verstappen was really unhappy with his car. After being outdone by team-mate Hadjar with three minutes to go in Q2, he said on the radio: “What a disaster.” Both made it through to the final part of qualifying regardless.
  • Williams were the slowest of the 16 cars still going, Carlos Sainz edging Alex Albon with what he called a “horrible lap”.
  • Oliver Bearman, Nico Hulkenberg, Gasly and Gabriel Bortoleto were the others eliminated, with the shootout for pole once again being made up of cars from the big four teams as well as both the Racing Bulls.
  • Kimi Antonelli was quickest this time, more than four-tenths better off than Geroge Russell, the two Mercedes cars split by the Ferraris with Charles Leclerc quicker than Lewis Hamilton on that final rehearsal before gunning for pole.

Q3

  • Hamilton had a small snap during his first run of Q3 which may have cost him the two-tenths of a second that he was down on Antonelli, putting him right into the fight for pole on pure pace.
  • Antonelli got the better of Russell on the first runs to take provisional pole, but asked angrily: “Why am I first?” when Mercedes sent them both out for their last push for pole.
  • Not that it mattered, as he improved massively oto go nearly four-tenths quicker than Russell again and took pole, while his team-mate had to settle for fourth.
  • Charles Leclerc produced a strong lap to deny Hamilton a front row berth, meaning an all-British second row instead.
  • Verstappen managed only seventh, beaten by Lando Norris in the underpowered McLaren and also team-mate Hadjar, who had better pace throughout qualifying.
