Summer of 69 superstar Bryan Adams has released a new single lambasting US President Donald Trump. Adams marked Canada Day on July 1 with the release of ‘51st State’, a powerful new rock anthem celebrating Canadian pride and identity. The song is a tongue in cheek response to Trump’s “ridiculous narrative” around Canada being better off becoming anything other than Canadian, with the message of ‘51st State’ being one of unity and optimism, rooted in Adams’ own connection to his homeland. For more than four decades, Adams, who lives in London, has served as one of Canada’s most recognisable musical voices on the world stage.
He said: “I wanted to write something about Canada because Canada is home. There is more that binds us than divides us. This is a tribute to the pride and spirit of my fellow Canadians – the rest is just noise.”
During his second term in office, President Trump has repeatedly proposed that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States, using the idea both as a hard-ball trade negotiation tactic and as a regular talking point.
He claims that joining the U.S. is the “only thing that makes sense” to resolve ongoing tariff disputes and economic strains between the two nations.
In March 2025, amid intense trade disputes over U.S tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium, and automobiles, Trump posted on social media: “The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State. This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear”.
Trump believes the U.S. effectively “subsidises” Canada to the tune of $200 billion a year through trade deficits and defence spending
It is believed Trump’s idea originated as a joke during a late 2024 Mar-a-Lago dinner with then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. However, the rhetoric persisted into 2025 and 2026. During a tense May 2025 Oval Office meeting, Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, firmly told Trump Canada is “not for sale”.
