Indiana Fever might have to do without their star player in the near future with Caitlin Clark on the verge of a one-game suspension. The 24-year-old earned herself a seventh technical foul of the season against Connecticut Sun on Wednesday.

One more and she will receive an automatic one-game suspension from the WNBA. The incident happened during the third quarter of the match at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, which the Fever went on to win comfortably, 123-88.

With Indiana cruising 95-67 and little over 30 seconds left of the third period, Clark was on the receiving end of a knock from Sun Guard, Saniya Rivers. To loosely quote Shania Twain, that didn’t impress Clark much, and she reacted furiously, even as her opponent walked away.

Rivers subsequently had some choice words, which led Clark to launch her own rebuttal as she pointed at her face and told the Sun guard: “Check the f***ing scoreboard.” Both players were ultimately handed technical fouls.

Clark addressed the incident after the final whistle. “She said she was locking me up, so I said, ‘Scoreboard,’ and the ref didn’t like that,” the Fever guard explained.

“That fire is what makes me, me.”

She was then questioned as to whether a suspension for an eighth technical foul was unavoidable. “You gotta ask the magic 8 ball,” Clark replied.

Head coach Stephanie White was also quizzed on Clark’s tendency to accumulate technical fouls.

“She knows. She has awareness about it,” White responded.

“We’ll try to help her when we can, but sometimes we can’t. And if she wants to be strategic about which game she doesn’t want to play, then she’ll let ‘er fly.”

Indiana went on to post a franchise-record 123 points in a commanding 123-88 victory. Clark delivered an outstanding 27 points on 8/13 shooting, converting five of her nine three-pointers, while also registering 11 assists in just 27 minutes.

Clark became the sole player in WNBA history to notch 25 points and contribute 10 assists in under 30 minutes earlier this week. On Wednesday, she achieved the remarkable feat for a second time.

Clark (27 points), Kelsey Mitchell (23 points), and Aliyah Boston (22 points) established themselves as the all-time leading WNBA trio in shared 20-point contests. The victory saw the Fever advance to 17-10 for the season.
