Can England replace Jordan Henderson in their World Cup squad?

  • What happened? During the celebrations after England’s win over Mexico, Jordan Henderson slipped while climbing over the advertising boards and landed awkwardly on his arm. The England star required medical attention on the pitch and was eventually stretchered off the pitch.
  • Is he okay? Not quite. Henderson was taken to hospital in Mexico and it has since been confirmed the midfielder will undergo surgery for a problem with his wrist.
  • Will he play again? His World Cup is already over. The surgery will keep him out for some time, meaning Henderson will play no further part in the tournament with England.
  • Did he play much? Henderson featured once for England during their five games at the World Cup, coming off the bench against Panama in the final match of the group.
  • Can England replace him? Unfortunately not. Injury replacements can only take place before a team plays their first match at the tournament, as was the case when England replaced Tino Livramento on the eve of the Croatia game.
  • What has Tuchel said? “Not good, not good, next thing is a right defender now with the red card, Jordan just fell over an injured his wrist, it looks really bad.”
  • How many matches are left? England have a maximum of three matches left at the World Cup and will face Norway in the quarter-final next. If they win that, they’ll be guaranteed to play either in the final or the third-place play-off.
