Caswell County shooting: Multiple people killed in ‘mass shooting’ in Prospect Hills | World | News
Several people have died after a mass shooting at a home in a small North Carolina community in the US. The Caswell County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a call for service just before 8am on Wednesday at 352 Brooks Road in the Prospect Hill area of Caswell County. When officers arrived, they found multiple people who had been shot.
Authorities confirmed there were multiple fatalities, while one person was transported to Duke University Hospital with a gunshot wound. Officials have not yet released the identities of those involved or confirmed the total number of people killed. Television footage from the scene showed the two-storey home cordoned off with crime scene tape as numerous law enforcement vehicles remained outside while investigators continued their work. Speaking to local broadcaster WFMY, Caswell County Sheriff Tony Durden said there had been “multiple fatalities” and confirmed one person remained in hospital. He said there are no outstanding suspects and stressed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
“The community is safe,” the sheriff said, adding that investigators believe it was “an isolated incident”. Authorities have not released any information on whether anyone has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
Sheriff Durden declined to discuss a possible motive or say whether the shooting was linked to a domestic incident, telling reporters the investigation remains in its early stages.
He also declined to say whether a weapon had been recovered or reveal what type of weapon was involved.
The sheriff later told local broadcaster WXII that investigators have identified both the victims and the suspect, but declined to say whether they knew each other.
He also said he did not believe there had been any recent calls to the Brooks Road property before Wednesday’s shooting.
